When Jared was 15, he was a big fan of Casey Neistat’s vlogs on YouTube which typically consisted of Casey riding around NYC with his electric skateboard. E-skateboards at this time cost $2K, which Jared couldn’t find under a couch cushion at the time. His father and himself, both being very mechanically inclined, decided to build one themselves. After posting a few videos online, people were asking if they could buy one! This was the start of BuildKitBoards, which solely he grew over 7 years to reaching 6000+ riders from 30+ countries.
In December of 2021, Jared’s nephew Brian was old enough to be gifted a skateboard by his uncle for Christmas. When unboxing the board, Brian wanted to learn all about it and to see how everything worked! Jared taught Brian about the different board components over the course of a few hours until it was ready to take outside to ride. Before Brian could even hop on, Jared’s sister said “Hello! Do I need to slap you!?! Do this for kids!”; and so the idea of Lectec was born!
By summer of 2022, Lectec showcased its first prototypes at the Electrify Expo and it was a smashing success! With great feedback from our testers, there was a lot of work ahead to further improve the kits. To help with this challenge, Luke left his engineering job at Amazon to join his best friend at Lectec full time after helping for years when he had the free time.
At the end of 2023, after spending a year in the classroom of a local high school and the redesign of the boards complete based off feedback from educators - we were ready to move full steam ahead! Lectec kits were introduced to schools, camps, makerspaces, and more all across the US and internationally. It was incredibly fulfilling to see the amazing results!
Lectec’s mission is to spark inspiration and interest in STEM with fun and functional ed-tech projects we wish we had growing up. We are super excited to create awesome hands-on projects for students that can be uniquely enjoyed inside and outside of the classroom! With many exciting new features being added to our custom LMS (learn.lectec.com), advanced technical components being built onto the skateboard, and the introduction of e-bikes & e-scooters; we are continuously innovating to electrify education!
